Recycling

The Cherbourg Materials Recovery Facility (MeRF) provides a key recycling service for Cherbourg and surrounding regions, including the North and South Burnett, Gympie and Fraser Coast.

The facility processes materials collected through kerbside recycling (yellow lid wheelie bins), helping to recover and reuse valuable resources.

Cherbourg also operates a Container Refund Point (CRP) as part of the Containers for Change program. This includes a collection point located next to the MeRF, with additional collection sites across the region feeding back into the Cherbourg facility — including Kingaroy, Kilkivan, Nanango and surrounding areas.

Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council’s recycling operations also extend to Kingaroy, which is managed as part of Council’s broader enterprise. The Kingaroy operation includes:
• A depot in Nanango
• Bag drop locations in Blackbutt, Yarraman, Wondai and Proston

These services support a wide network across the region, including:
• 25 local schools
• 51 businesses, sporting clubs and community organisations

Together, these operations play an important role in supporting recycling, reducing waste and creating practical environmental outcomes for Cherbourg and the wider region.
