Location: Cherbourg Full time (38hr week)

About The Community Justice Group (CJG) program is funded by the Department of Justice and Attorney-General (DJAG). The aim of the CJG is to contribute to a reduction in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander over-representation in the criminal justice system through delivery of Services by the CJG’s in support of a process that ensures culturally appropriate and responsive administration of justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Role:

The Justice Group Coordinator will effectively assist the community justice group through its board of management or equivalent to achieve the primary objectives of the CJG Program. The Coordinator of the CJG reports to the Barambah Local Justice Group Board of Directors and its funding body DJAG.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend court sittings to provide assistance to victims and offenders.
  • Assist in mediation and peacekeeping services.
  • Assist in preparing and presenting written/oral sentencing, pre-sentencing reports and submissions to the courts
  • Coordinate Murri Court Reports, programs, appointments and Court proceedings with Respected Elders of the CJG
  • Link victims and offenders with support and legal services
  • Facilitate improved links between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and statutory workers, Queensland Police, Courts and other parts of the justice system.
  • Prepare and deliver accurate and thorough reports in a timely manner to the DJAG and Board of Directors of the Barambah Local Justice Group.

Selection criteria (This description details the minimum skills required to perform the duties of this position.)

  1. A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (specifically relating to DFV).
  2. A demonstrated ability with interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • A sound knowledge or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of court processes, legislation, practices and trends relating to the criminal justice system in Queensland.
  • Articulate the consent feedback of clients for effective court-based support or to facilitate effective diversionary support as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate knowledge or the ability to acquire knowledge of office equipment and application software including Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Ability to as a team with board members and stakeholders both Government and Non- Government organisations.
  • Demonstrate initiative and effectiveness in performing duties of an organisational nature, achieving goals, meeting deadlines and to work autonomously as required.
  • Aboriginality and /or Torres Strait Islander identification.
  • Provide the names and contact details of two Aboriginal / Torres Strait Islander people from your community that are willing to act as referees for you.

To perform this role, it is essential that the person is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Antidiscrimination Act 1991.
