Australia has a new emergency warning system called AusAlert, which will officially begin operating from October 2026.
AusAlert is designed to quickly send important emergency warnings to compatible mobile phones, tablets and smart watches. These alerts can help people, families and communities make decisions quickly during disasters and emergencies.
What types of emergencies will AusAlert warn about?
AusAlert may be used for:
- Bushfires
- Floods
- Cyclones
- Tsunamis
- Health emergencies
- Security incidents
- Biosecurity incidents
Two types of alerts
Critical Alerts
Critical Alerts are used for the most serious emergencies.
These alerts:
- Vibrate your device
- Play a loud siren-like sound for around 10 seconds
- Will sound even if your phone is on silent or “Do Not Disturb”
Priority Alerts
Priority Alerts are used when conditions are changing and new information is needed.
These alerts may vibrate and play a warning sound depending on your device settings.
National Test – Monday 27 July 2026
Before AusAlert launches nationally, a test message will be sent across Australia.
Queensland test time:
🕑 Monday 27 July 2026 at 2:00 pm
This is only a test. You do not need to do anything.
If your phone receives the test alert, it will:
- Vibrate
- Play a loud siren-like sound
- Display a message saying it is a test
Important reminder
If the sound may upset babies, children, Elders or others nearby, you can switch your device off or place it in aeroplane mode before the test and leave it off for at least one hour.

Emergency alerts are only one source of information. Family, friends, neighbours, local radio and community networks all play an important role in helping keep our mob informed and safe.
